David
Gerry received his Bachelor of Music in Performance and his Master of
Music in Performance degrees from the Faculty of Music, University of
Toronto. He received his Associate Diploma from the Royal
Conservatory of Music, which also awarded him the Gold Medal for flute.
David's teachers have included Nora Shulman,
Jeanne Baxtresser, Geoffrey Gilbert, and Suzanne Shulman. He won
the MacMillan Prize for distinguished service to Canadian music,
enabling him to study with Shinichi Suzuki and Toshio Takahashi in
Matsumoto and graduate from the Talent Education Research Institute with
a diploma in flute pedagogy. A registered Teacher trainer for the
Suzuki Association of the Americas and the European Suzuki Association,
David has taught at workshops, institutes and conferences across North
America, as well as in Australia, Europe and Japan.
An active performer, David has appeared as
soloist with numerous orchestras, including those of Hamilton, Toronto
and Buffalo. He frequently collaborates with the distinguished
Canadian harpist Marie Lorcini as the duo "Orfeo", performing
on both modern and renaissance flutes. A champion of Canadian
music, he has premiered over 20 new works and has received grants from
the Canada Council and the Ontario Arts Council to assist him in
commissioning new pieces.
David is instructor of flute at the School of
the Arts, McMaster University and Mohawk College. He is also on
the faculty of the Great Lakes Flute Centre. David is the
past-chair of the Suzuki Association of Ontario, chair of the flute
committee of the International Suzuki Association and is flute columnist
for the American Suzuki Journal. In addition to his work with
students in Hamilton, he maintains a busy schedule of workshops, master
classes and concerts.
